Why We Built RateAPI
While building PlanFi, we encountered a frustrating problem: our users wanted to know when refinancing made sense for their financial plan. The answer depends on current mortgage rates—but there was no simple, developer-friendly way to access this data.
Existing solutions were either prohibitively expensive, required complex partnership agreements, or returned stale data that couldn't be trusted for real financial decisions. We needed real-time rates from actual lenders, delivered through a clean API that any developer could integrate.
So we built RateAPI. We aggregate mortgage rates from thousands of lenders across the country, normalize the data, and serve it through a simple REST API with sub-100ms response times. Whether you're building a fintech app, a real estate platform, or an AI agent that helps users with financial decisions, RateAPI gives you the data you need.
What started as infrastructure for PlanFi became its own product—one that solves the same problem for every developer building in the mortgage and real estate space.
